🏆 The Superlatives 🏆

The Most Wholesome

San Antonio Spurs player Victor Wembanyama won the heart of every bookworm when he said in a recent interview that he goes to bed every night at 9 pm so that he can read before sleeping. The French basketball star said he's really into fantasy novels at the moment & reading a few classics in English for practice. He said this ritual is so important to him that he puts his phone on DND. Respect his bedtime & boundaries, ok?

The Most Unhinged

Fights in the NHL are a normal part of the game. But goalies starting fights? Not so much. Florida Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky lost his cool during their game against the Ottawa Senators. Granted, Ottawa Forward Brady Tkachuk kinda tripped him… but no one expected calm & collected Bobrovsky to behave so… so… un-goalie-like.

🏀 It ALL falls down: NBA All-Star Weekend fell, well, flat this past weekend. The skills challenge, which ‘Team Pacers’ won, was too long, and the participants lacked enthusiasm and competitive spirit (which was a theme throughout the weekend). The dunk contest has been doing a slow fall right before our eyes for the last few years, and this year, it finally hit the floor…anyone got a life alert? While Mac McClung took home the trophy for the second year in a row, the dunks just weren’t dunking, if you know what we mean. The All-Star game itself saw Damien Lillard crowned MVP and was basically the second coming of the 3-point contest…with equally as much defense. To top it all off, the whole shebang started late…we thought you said 8 pm, not 8:40. This is not ya auntie’s cookout: you can’t start late and be underwhelming….pick a struggle.

The bright spot of the weekend was the actual 3-point shooting contest (not the other one masking as an All-Star game,) which Damien Lillard also won. And we can’t forget the Stephen vs Sabrina 3-point shooting contest, which was fun to watch and brought a fresh new perspective to the weekend. Curry won with a score of 29, but Ionescu held her own, scoring 26. Maybe more of this and less of whatever else was happening that weekend.

🏀 Me, myself, and I: Celtics All-Star, Jayson Tatum, sat down with Malika Andrews this weekend to let the world know that he backs himself. “Myself,” is what he told the ESPN analyst when asked who the best player in the league was. But is he, though? Maybe…maybe not. What we can say is that he might not be too far off as he continues to rise in the rankings for this year’s MVP candidate. Many fans and work-from-home commentators have been rolling their eyes at the gaul…the gumption. But what was he supposed to say? “It’s Lebron for me.”???...clearly not.

🏒 Houston, We May Have a Hockey Team: Houston Rockets owner Tillman Fertitta wants to bring an NHL team to Houston. Although it’s been speculated that talks with the NHL have gotten more serious as of late, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has been pretty firm that the NHL is not in expansion mode. If Fertitta successfully acquires an NHL team or gets the league to agree to an expansion, Houston will have a team in all major league sports, with teams in the NFL, MLB, NBA, MLS, and NWSL.

Got High Hopes For Messi, We Gon’ See: Lionel Messi and Inter Miami opened the MLS season by hosting a match against Real Salt Lake. This marks the beginning of Messi’s first full MLS season with Miami. Inter Miami was reportedly one of the worst teams in the MLS; however, with the addition of the Argentinian soccer superstar, the team is highly favored for the MLS Cup. We’ll see if those predictions hold, but the team is on the path with their 2 - 0 win against Real Salt Lake

‘Tis the Season: Baseball season is right around the corner! While opening day across the league is March 28th, most teams reported to Arizona (Cactus) or Florida (Grapefruit) this week for Spring Training. Check out MLB.tv to watch any of the 30 Major League teams play on Saturday, February 24.

🏎️ The Great American Race: Calm down, this highlight isn’t about politics. We’re talkin race cars! The Daytona 500 was won by William Byron this week in a thrilling battle that saw 41 lead changes and a 23-car pile-up. Byron won his first Daytona 500 after having never finished higher than 21st in the competition. With this win, he snapped a 9-race losing streak at the Daytona 500 by Hendrick Motorsports. Oh, and FYI, Byron is a self-taught driver who learned from racing on computers. Take that haters… gaming is a sport!

🎾 Who me? Yes, you! Couldn’t be…then who? Two-time Grand Slam Champion Simona Halep has made headlines after announcing her intentions to sue Quantum Nutrition, the company that made her supplements. If you didn’t know, Ms. Halep got caught up in a bit of scandal after the 2022 US Open when her tests came back positive for a banned substance. This caused the ITIA to pistol-whip Simona with a 4-year ban. Simona’s response has been to deny, deny, deny, as she refuses to go down without a fight. She has remained adamant that she must have unknowingly consumed supplements contaminated with the banned substance.

After appealing the ban, now she has decided that someone else needs to be held responsible….the company that made the supplements. So basically, she’s taking everyone down with her and hoping to get a 10 million dollar come-up in the process.

This week, we’re talkin’ soccer, and your term is: clear.

In soccer, to clear means to kick or head the ball away from the goalmouth, thus killing an immediate threat to the goal.

IRL example: When you see your bestie's toxic ex trying to make their way across the room to say “hello,” but you cut them off before they can get to your friends. Sorry, your goal has been denied.

WNBA player and champion A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces stays rocking a jersey dress. It's giving early 2000s nostalgia and we're kinda feeling it!

If you’re trying to step back into the jersey dress era, here are a few takes on a jersey dress that you can shop right now.

Lastly, we have to announce one more fun Wemby fact. Did you know he was recently named as a brand ambassador for Louis Vuitton?

Issa French connection!
