🏆 The Superlatives 🏆
The Best Bromance: Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce
We have watched this bromance blossom over the last six NFL seasons, and it’s time to give this ‘ship what it deserves. Kansas City Chiefs teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce have officially recorded sixteen postseason touchdown passes/receptions as of Sunday's game against the Buffalo Bills - the most between two players in NFL history. Yay them!
And though the commercials and celebrity status may be getting a bit out of hand, we can’t deny we love to see the duo both on and off the field!
Most Riveting Rivals: Jayson Tatum and Grant Williams
Former teammates Jayson and Grant shared a few words during the Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks' latest match-up, and it was the trash talk we live for. We knew it was all in jest, but watching the two leave everything on the court was fun. Who hasn’t talked a little smack with their friends?
He Kicks! He Doesn’t Score! 🏈
Not to kick them while they’re down, but in the divisional round of NFL playoffs last weekend, the kickers had significant roles to play in a couple of games, and unfortunately, the pressure got to them.
Last Sunday, the Buffalo Bills ended their playoff run. The Bills faced off against the Kansas City Chiefs. The game was close, with the Chiefs winning 27 to 24. Most fans believe that the game ultimately came down to the missed 44-yard field goal by Bills kicker Tyler Bass. But as the Bills' QB, Josh Allen, says, “You win as a team, and you lose as a team. One play doesn’t define a game.”
We totally agree with him. His two incompletions after a 54-yard drive right before the field goal attempt also probably didn’t help.
Also in missed kicks, during the Green Bay Packers' 24-21 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, kicker Anders Carlson missed a 41-yard field-goal attempt that could have given the Packers a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter. The rookie kicker has missed the most kicks in the NFL, with 13 missed kicks total for the season. It won’t be surprising if the Packers decide to kick him to the curb.
Detroit, stand up: After the Detroit Lions win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Lions are headed to the AFC Championship for the first time since 1992. So, yeah, it’s been a while.
On the same day, in the NHL, the Detroit Red Wings also beat the Tampa Bay Lightning. It looks like Detroit sports teams are on the come up. Now, let’s see if the Pistons can finally win something, too.
Who doesn’t love a nap: Before we wrap our football recap, we’ll stop by LaLaLand, or wherever the Houston Texans went when they decided to take a nap during the second half of their game against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens won and will be playing the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday for the AFC Championship.
It’s all leading up to Usher’s Concert the Big Game, as we head into the AFC and NFC championship games to see who will be our Super Bowl LVIII contenders on Sunday, February 11.
And Then There Were 4 🎾
Back that thang up: The last American standing in the Australian Open, Coco Gauff, made it through to the semifinals, but lost to powerhouse Aryna Sabalenka. This rematch of the US Open final was a nailbiter, but Big Lenka got her revenge in the end, winning in straight sets: 7-6, 6-4.
The Belarusian is clearly eager to run it back and hasn’t lost a set on her way to defend her Aussie Open title. The other finalist, Qinwen Zheng, will have her hands full, as Sabalenka is heavily favored to win it all, again. Watch the championship match Saturday, 1/27, on ESPN.
It ain’t over, but it’s over: On the men’s side, Jannik Sinner upset 10-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic in 4 sets: 6-1, 6-2, 7-6, 6-3. Djokovic was not shy in declaring this to be “one of the worst Grand Slam matches” he’s ever played…at least he’s honest.
The 22-year-old Italian will advance to his first-ever Grand Slam final, where he will face former US Open Champ Daniil Medvedev. For the first time since 2005, the Australian Open championship match will not feature Djokovic, Federer, or Nadal. Could this be the start of a new era? The tennis boys can only hope. Watch the Championship match on Sunday, 1/28, on ESPN.
Twitter Fingers Turn Into Trigger Fingers 🤳
Say WHATTTT???
— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII)
3:55 AM • Jan 16, 2024
Robert Griffin III (a.k.a. RGIII) and his former coach, Jay Gruden, are having a moment. After watching the Eagles lose, Gruden took to social media platform X (RIP Twitter) to lament the coaches failing Philly QB Jalen Hurts. RGIII saw the tweet & was swift to respond by calling out Gruden for what he perceived to be Gruden failing him ten years ago during their two seasons with the Washington Commanders.
This sparked a back-and-forth exchange between the two over X that was all a bit cringy. As things escalated, Gruden eventually told RGIII that he basically just wasn’t a good enough QB and that his shortcomings were just that… his. Gruden deleted this comment from social media, but y’all know the internet never forgets.
Cuckoo for Coco…NUTS?
Coco Gauff (yes, we’re talking about her again) played Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals and SPOILER ALERT: She won. But the tea is, Marta’s husband was spotted with a cryptic hat that read “Shake your cocos” and pictured a broken coconut. So creative.
We love a little jokey joke, yet it would seem that Coco had the last laugh since she won the match and gave the crowd a little “shakey shake” as she danced into the semifinals.
Musical Chairs Coaches
The coaches are on the move again as The Milwaukee Bucks have fired their head coach, Mike Budenholzer…wait, no, that was last summer….we mean, Adrian Griffin. Apparently, he lost Giannis Antetokounmpo...we mean, the locker room and…Giannis…whoops, the players thought it best to move on. Doc Rivers will be his replacement. Hopefully, the front office cleared this decision with Giannis….we mean, the team.
Let’s pray this change will help turn their season around because having a 31-13 record and being the 2nd-ranked team in the Eastern Conference is clearly a failure in their books. Overachievers!
Your sports term of the week is: jump ball! 🏀
A jump ball is a basketball term for when, at the start of the game, two players from the opposing teams jump for a basketball that a referee tosses up into the air. A jump ball is also a way to determine possession after two opposing players simultaneously gain possession of a ball.
Imagine it this way: You remember how the girlies were going crazy a few weeks ago about those pink Stanley Cups? Imagine if two people grabbed the same pink Stanley cup, and an employee came over & just threw it up into the air. You can pretend like this example is far-fetched, but we all saw the videos.
There seems to be a letterman jacket trend going on, and we’re here for it! This classic jacket give us a sense of nostalgia and remind us of what it’s like to attend high school home games and scout out cuties from the bleachers. A simpler time, indeed.
Here, we have two examples from the NBA that make us swoon. The men and the jackets.
